Enjoy networking-building at the buffet dinner. Maiko, an apprentice geisha wearing elaborate kimono and sash, will entertain you with exotic dance and omotenashi (Japanese word for hospitality). New Investigator Recognition Award ceremony will also take place during the dinner.

Japanese Culture Classes

 
   

Afternoon of October 18 (Mon) and 19 (Tue) *Dates are tentatively scheduled
Participation fee is included in the registration fee.
If you wish to attend the class, reserve your seat at the registration desk in the venue.

You can participate in one or both of the classes below (one time each):

  • Japanese Tea Ceremony Class
    You will have a chance to experience Sado, the Japanese way of tea. In this course of hospitality, you will be served a bitter Japanese tea and confectionary. Note that you may be asked to take your shoes off at the Japanese-style tatami rooms.
  • Japanese Calligraphy Class
    Shodo, a type of Japanese calligraphy, is a creative art form that uses a brush and blank ink to express the spiritual depth and beauty through the writing of Japanese letters – Kanji and Kana.
 

Optional Half-day Tours

 
   

If you wish to attend these tours, please register from the registration page.

  • For Arashiyama (JPY 8,000)
    October 17 (Sun), 13:30 – 18:00
    In this tour, you will visit Shigureden, a theme park featuring karuta, traditional Japanese playing cards. You will also visit Tenryu-ji, a temple registered as the UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Nonomiya Shrine, known for appearing in the “Tale of Genji” and also for the garden covered with moss. The bus will take you back to the venue. Snack lunch included.
  • For Ohara Sanzenin (JPY 8,000)
    October 17 (Sun), 13:30 – 18:00
    Ohara Sanzenin is known as the place where famous samurais and Buddhists spent their later years. You will also be visiting Jakkoin, a temple said to be built more than 1400 years ago. The bus will take you back to the venue. Snack lunch included.
  • Introductory Course: Making Handmade Bamboo Basket (JPY 9,000)
    October 19 (Tue), 14:00 – 18:00
    Bamboo basket making may seem complicated, but it is easier than you may think. You will have a chance to make a Japanese-style bamboo basket, which you can use for flower arrangement or as an interior accessory. You will also have a chance to stop by at the Kinkaku-ji, one of the most famous temples in Kyoto. The bus will take you back to the venue.

Note that the tours may not be available if the number of applicants does not reach the authorized number. In this case, the tour fee will be refunded.
